Ram Gopal Varma Hails 'Satluj' as 'Essential Filmmaking', Urges Authorities Not to Silence the Film

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has strongly praised Satluj, calling it one of the most courageous and important films in recent times. Sharing an emotional note on social media, the director described the film as more than just cinema, saying it left a lasting impact on him by revisiting one of the darkest chapters in Punjab's history. His post has since sparked widespread discussion online, with many applauding his support for the film while others continue to debate its historical and political themes.

In his note, Varma said Satluj is not a conventional film but a powerful cinematic confrontation with truth. He praised Diljit Dosanjh for delivering a restrained yet emotionally charged performance, noting that the actor avoids exaggerated heroism and instead portrays the character with quiet conviction. According to Varma, the film's emotional strength lies in its subtle storytelling rather than dramatic spectacle.

The filmmaker also appreciated Arjun Rampal for portraying the institutional decay surrounding the events depicted in the story. He further credited director Honey Trehan for choosing a measured, investigative approach instead of sensationalizing the subject. Varma observed that the narrative unfolds through official files, cremation records, and quiet conversations, allowing the disturbing reality to emerge gradually and making the impact even more powerful.

Reflecting on the film's larger message, Varma said Satluj explores how democracies can fail their own citizens and attempt to erase uncomfortable truths. He argued that the film raises difficult questions without becoming preachy, which, in his view, is one of its greatest achievements. He also suggested that the controversies surrounding the film's exhibition and availability only reinforce its importance, writing that art succeeds when it challenges those in positions of power.

Varma described Satluj as "essential filmmaking" that unsettles, educates, and stays with the audience long after the credits roll. He contrasted the film with commercial entertainers that prioritize spectacle, saying Satluj serves as a reminder of what cinema can accomplish when it is committed to truth and honesty. He further expressed hope that the film would be watched, discussed, and debated rather than suppressed.

Ending his note with a direct appeal, Varma urged authorities not to treat the film the way, according to him, human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra was treated. He argued that attempts to suppress uncomfortable truths only make them more powerful, emphasizing that truth becomes even harder to ignore when efforts are made to hide it.

Satluj is based on the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, the human rights activist who documented thousands of alleged extrajudicial killings and secret cremations during Punjab's militancy era in the 1980s and 1990s. The film stars Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role and has generated significant attention for its portrayal of the activist's work and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death.

The film has also been at the center of a major controversy. After reportedly facing a prolonged certification process, Satluj eventually premiered uncut on streaming platform ZEE5 in July 2026, but it was subsequently removed from the platform in India. The developments have fueled a broader conversation around artistic freedom, censorship, and the portrayal of politically sensitive events.

While supporters have praised Satluj for confronting a painful chapter of history and encouraging discussion, critics have argued that the film presents a one-sided perspective that does not sufficiently address the victims of separatist violence during the insurgency. The polarized response has only amplified interest in the film, making it one of the most talked-about releases of the year.

With Ram Gopal Varma now publicly backing Satluj, the conversation surrounding the film has gained fresh momentum. Whether viewed as an uncompromising work of cinema or a controversial interpretation of history, Satluj has undeniably become a focal point in the ongoing debate over artistic expression, historical memory, and the role of cinema in confronting uncomfortable truths.
