Jaipur, July 7 (SocialNews.XYZ) In a significant development, the State Election Commission declared that Panchayat and Urban Local Body (ULB) polls in Rajasthan cannot be held by July 31.
It emerged on Tuesday that in a letter sent to the Panchayati Raj Department on Monday, the Rajasthan State Election Commission stated that it would require at least 90 days to conduct polls for both Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies.
The Commission clarified that this timeline assumes the Rajasthan government finalises reservation quotas for SCs, STs, OBCs, and women, either independently or based on the recommendations of the OBC Commission.
The Rajasthan High Court, in its May 22 order, had directed the State Election Commission to complete elections for both Panchayats and Urban Local Bodies by July 31.
However, the reservation quotas for the OBC category have yet to be finalised, making adherence to the deadline unlikely.
Recently, the Panchayati Raj Department informed the Election Commission that the OBC Commission is expected to submit its reservation report by August 14, 2026.
Based on that report, the department plans to finalise reservation quotas for all categories by August 31.
Only after this process is completed can the Election Commission begin preparations for the polls.
In its reply, the State Election Commission stated that once reservation quotas are finalised and the department issues the official notification for the elections, it will require 90 days to complete the entire electoral process.
According to the Commission, Panchayat elections will take approximately 50 days and are likely to be conducted in four phases due to the increased number of Panchayats and logistical requirements.
Elections to Urban Local Bodies will take around 40 days and are expected to be held in two phases.
Reacting to the development on Tuesday, Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee President, Govind Singh Dotasra condemned the constant delaying of local polls.
Speaking to IANS, he said, "The BJP government has stopped caring for High Court, Supreme Court, Lok Sabha and the Constitution. They are eyeing 'One state, one election' hence there is intentional delay. The EC can't hold elections without data and they are not giving data."
