Kolkata, July 2 (SocialNews.XYZ) Former Trinamool Congress councillor from the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, Debraj Chakraborty, who was arrested on July 1 by the West Bengal Police in connection with a disproportionate assets case, was on Thursday remanded to seven days in police custody by a district court.
When Chakraborty, also the husband of former Trinamool legislator and acclaimed devotional singer Aditi Munshi, was produced before the Barasat Court in North 24 Parganas, a large crowd assembled within the court premises. They started shouting slogans describing Chakraborty as a "thief", and some of them even hurled eggs at him.
The huge police contingent somehow rescued him from the egg attack and took him inside the courtroom. In order to protect his head from being hit by hurled eggs, Chakraborty arrived at the court premises sporting a baseball cap.
However, some policemen were hit by the hurled eggs while attempting to protect Chakraborty and escort him safely into the courtroom.
Later, after a brief hearing in the matter, the judge of the Barasat court remanded him to police custody for seven days.
Last week, the single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court headed by Justice Jay Sengupta rejected the anticipatory bail plea filed by Chakraborty. However, the same bench, on the same day, granted interim anticipatory bail to his wife Aditi, a co-accused in the same disproportionate assets case. The singer-turned-politician was granted anticipatory bail on the grounds that the couple have a four-month-old daughter.
After remaining absconding for several days, Debraj was finally arrested in Purulia on Wednesday evening.
The police had started an investigation against Debraj and Aditi on charges of possessing undeclared assets.
It is alleged that Aditi, the then Trinamool Congress MLA from the Rajarhat-Gopalpur Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas district, and her husband transferred assets worth at least Rs 100 crore anonymously and in the names of relatives and acquaintances before the 2026 Assembly elections.
Debraj, a councillor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, was considered an influential figure in the area.
There are serious allegations against the couple, including possession of assets disproportionate to known sources of income, concealment of assets and money laundering.
Aditi is also accused of understating her assets in the election affidavit that she filed for the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly polls, in which she was defeated.
