Guwahati, June 30 (SocialNews.XYZ) A father and his daughter were arrested after Cachar Police seized suspected heroin and psychotropic tablets during an anti-narcotics operation in Assam's Cachar district, officials said on Tuesday.
The accused have been identified as Shamsur Uddin Laskar and his daughter, Rubina Begum. Both were arrested following a late-night raid carried out by police in the Banskandi area under the Lakhipur Assembly constituency in Cachar district.
Police said the operation was launched on the basis of specific Intelligence inputs regarding the alleged storage and movement of narcotic substances from a residential premises at Alipur Basti locality in the Cachar district.
During the search, police examined a scooter bearing registration number AS-11K-5955 parked at the residence. The search led to the recovery of 200 suspected heroin vials weighing around 5.5 grams along with 310 suspected psychotropic tablets, officials said.
The contraband was seized in accordance with the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in the presence of witnesses, police added.
Following the recovery, the father and daughter were taken into custody and booked under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act.
Officials said that a police team has been trying to establish the source of the seized narcotics and identify the intended recipients of the consignment.
The probe is also focussed on tracing any larger drug trafficking network that may be linked to the accused. Police have not ruled out further arrests as the investigation progresses.
A senior police official said the district police have intensified Intelligence-based operations against narcotics trafficking as part of the Assam government's ongoing campaign to curb the illegal drug trade.
Over the past few years, Assam Police have carried out a series of major anti-drug operations across several districts bordering neighbouring states and international boundaries, leading to the seizure of large quantities of heroin, methamphetamine tablets and other contraband.
Officials said the crackdown against drug trafficking would continue with sustained enforcement action and intelligence-led operations across Cachar district to dismantle narcotics supply chains and bring those involved to justice.
