Assam CM pays tribute to Sidho-Kanhu, Santhal Hul martyrs on Hul diwas

Guwahati, June 30 (SocialNews.XYZ) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday paid tributes to legendary Santhal freedom fighters Sidho Murmu and Kanhu Murmu on Hul Diwas, saying their valiant struggle against injustice and exploitation remains an enduring source of inspiration for the nation and a defining chapter in India's freedom movement.

In a message shared on social media, the Chief Minister said the Santhal Hul occupies an immortal place in the country's history of resistance against oppression and continues to inspire generations with its message of courage, sacrifice and determination.

"On Hul Day, countless salutations to Sidho-Kanhu and all the heroic warriors of the Santhal Hul. Their valiant struggle for the protection of water, forests and land, and against injustice, gave a new direction to the freedom movement. Their sacrifice and martyrdom will forever remain a source of inspiration," CM Sarma said.

Observed every year on June 30, Hul Diwas commemorates the historic Santhal rebellion of 1855 led by brothers Sidho and Kanhu Murmu against the exploitative policies of the British colonial administration and the oppressive zamindari system.

The uprising, popularly known as the Santhal Hul, is regarded as one of the earliest organised tribal revolts against British rule in India.

Thousands of Santhals from present-day Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bihar and adjoining regions joined the movement, demanding protection of their land, forests and traditional rights while resisting economic exploitation, forced revenue collection and colonial oppression.

Although the rebellion was eventually defeated by the British, it is widely recognised as a landmark episode in India's long struggle for independence.

Historians believe the movement inspired several later anti-colonial struggles and highlighted the significant role played by tribal communities in resisting foreign rule.

The Santhal Hul also drew attention to issues of land alienation, exploitation by moneylenders and the denial of traditional rights, making it not only a political uprising but also a social movement rooted in the demand for justice and dignity.

CM Sarma said the courage, determination and supreme sacrifice of Sidho, Kanhu and countless Santhal warriors continue to inspire people across the country to uphold the ideals of justice, equality, patriotism and national pride.
