Bengaluru, June 25 (SocialNews.XYZ) Former Karnataka Chief Minister and BJP Member of Parliament Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday described the Emergency imposed by the Congress government in 1975 as a "dark chapter" in India's history and called upon citizens to reaffirm their commitment to protecting democracy and the Constitution.
In a post on social media platform X, Bommai said the 51st anniversary of the Emergency serves as a reminder of the period during which democratic institutions and fundamental rights were curtailed.
"It has been 51 years since the Emergency was imposed on the nation. The Emergency remains one of the darkest chapters in post-Independence India. It was a day when fundamental rights were curtailed, opposition leaders were jailed and democracy was virtually strangled," he said.
Bommai alleged that the Emergency was imposed by the Congress leadership under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to safeguard political power.
"No one can forget that the Emergency was imposed across the country to protect the position of the then leadership. The people of India became more vigilant after that period and have consistently rejected any attempt to undermine democracy and the Constitution," he said.
The BJP leader further claimed that this public awareness was one of the reasons why the Congress was currently sitting in the Opposition at the national level.
Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bommai said PM Modi has consistently upheld constitutional values since assuming office.
"As soon as he became Prime Minister, Narendra Modi declared that the Constitution was his guiding document and that serving the people was his foremost duty. He has remained committed to those principles. He is a true protector of the Constitution and a key architect of India's development," Bommai said.
Calling for national unity, Bommai urged citizens to remain vigilant against what he described as divisive forces.
"The anniversary of the Emergency should serve as an occasion for all of us to renew our commitment to protecting democracy. Even today, there is a need for all patriots to unite against divisive forces. It is both necessary and inevitable that we stand together to safeguard the nation and democratic values," he said.
Bommai appealed to citizens across the country to remember the lessons of the Emergency and strengthen their resolve to preserve democratic institutions and constitutional principles.
