CISF seizes suspected ganja from Delhi-bound passenger at Imphal Airport

Imphal, June 24 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel seized suspected cannabis (ganja) from a Delhi-bound passenger at the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal, officials said on Wednesday.

According to an official statement, CISF personnel detected 420 grams of a suspected contraband substance during a random X-BIS screening of baggage at Imphal Airport. Demonstrating high alertness and vigilance, CISF personnel intercepted the passenger during screening before boarding the Delhi-bound flight.

Upon a thorough examination of the baggage, security personnel recovered a packet containing suspected cannabis (ganja), weighing approximately 420 grams, concealed inside the luggage.

Following established procedures, the baggage was opened in the presence of CISF (CIW staff), Airport Police, and officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The passenger, along with the suspected contraband, was subsequently handed over to the Singjamei Police Station for further investigation and legal action.

“CISF remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring safe and secure civil aviation by maintaining robust screening procedures and constant vigilance against unlawful activities,” the statement said.

The CISF is responsible for securing most airports across the Northeastern region, including the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal.

Manipur and Mizoram have emerged as major drug trafficking corridors in Northeast India due to their long and largely unfenced international borders with Myanmar. These porous frontiers have frequently been exploited by transnational drug syndicates to smuggle narcotics and other contraband into India.

Five districts of Manipur, Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Kamjong and Ukhrul, share a 398-km-long unfenced international border with Myanmar, posing significant challenges for law enforcement agencies engaged in curbing illegal cross-border activities.

Meanwhile, while addressing the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting in New Delhi earlier this month, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh highlighted the security and law-and-order challenges arising from the ongoing conflict in Myanmar.

The Chief Minister underscored the need for stronger border management, enhanced surveillance mechanisms and coordinated action to combat drug trafficking, arms smuggling and human trafficking along the international border.

Singh informed the meeting that the Ministry of Home Affairs has completed fencing of 50 km of the India-Myanmar border to curb illegal arms and drug smuggling. Construction work on an additional 80-km stretch has already begun, he added.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the state government would continue working closely with central agencies and security forces to strengthen anti-drug operations and ensure that Manipur remains at the forefront of the fight against narcotics trafficking in the region.
