Rajasthan: Panchana Dam protestors set June 27 deadline for water release

Khandip, June 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) Claiming that Rajasthan has not witnessed a farmers’ movement of such magnitude in seven decades, Todabhim MLA Ramkesh Meena on Tuesday said the ongoing Khandip Mahapanchayat for the release of Panchna Dam water has become a statewide issue and is now being discussed in Delhi.

Addressing thousands of farmers gathered on the 19th day of the agitation, Meena accused the state government of attempting to divide communities to weaken the movement.

He warned that farmers had set June 27 as the deadline for releasing water into the command area canals and questioned the government’s silence, noting that ministers had visited nearby villages but had not come to Khandip despite the massive turnout.

The Mahapanchayat and indefinite sit-in protest demanding the release of water witnessed a major show of strength, with Members of Parliament, MLAs, and senior public representatives joining thousands of farmers and openly backing the movement.

The protest ground turned into a sea of people as Panch-Patels, farmers, women, and youth from dozens of villages across Nadauti and Todabhim tehsils arrived to express solidarity.

The gathering was addressed by Tonk-Sawai Madhopur MP Harishchandra Meena, Todabhim MLA Ghanshyam Mahar, former MLA Lakhan Singh Meena, and former minister Golma Devi, all of whom extended support and demanded immediate release of water.

Former MLA Lakhan Singh Meena declared that the struggle would continue until justice was secured for farmers.

“The fight for farmers’ rights will continue until water from the Panchna Dam is released. We will not allow the legitimate rights of farmers to be ignored,” he said.

MLA Ghanshyam Mahar accused the government of neglecting farmers and ignoring the concerns of the command area.

“This movement is not of one village or one community; it is a fight for the rights of thousands of farmers. Every public representative must come to Khandip and stand with the farmers. Those who remain absent will have to answer to the people,” he said.

Ramkesh Meena said the scale of the agitation had made it one of the most talked-about movements in Rajasthan.

“We have given an ultimatum until June 27. The government must order the release of water into our canals before then,” he said.

MP Harishchandra Meena assured farmers of his support, saying the demand was based on justice and implementation of court-backed decisions.

“Our fight is not against any section of society. We are demanding that the government fulfill its legal obligations. This movement will succeed,” he said.

The Panchna Command Area Development Struggle Committee announced that on June 24, thousands more farmers, Panch-Patels, women, and youth from villages across the region will arrive in a convoy of hundreds of vehicles.

The committee and MLA Ramkesh Meena also called upon all MPs, MLAs, and public representatives, irrespective of political affiliation, to visit the protest site and strengthen what they described as a non-political movement dedicated to securing justice and water rights.

As attendance continues to swell and political support gathers momentum, the Khandip Mahapanchayat is emerging as one of the most significant farmers’ movements in eastern Rajasthan, with protesters vowing to intensify their agitation if the government fails to release water from the Panchna Dam by June 27.
