Bihar govt suspends Beur jail superintendent over irregularities

Patna, June 23 (SocialNews.XYZ) In a significant action against alleged corruption and administrative lapses, the Bihar government has suspended Neeraj Kumar Jha, Superintendent of Patna’s Beur Central Jail, with immediate effect.

The action follows findings of serious irregularities during an inspection conducted inside the prison.

On June 20, a joint team comprising officials from the prison and district administrations inspected Beur Central Jail. During the raid, several alleged violations and irregularities reportedly came to light.

The inspection team found illegal mess facilities allegedly operating within prison wards, unauthorised use of heaters in inmate wards, alleged overpricing of goods in the prison canteen, complaints that inmates were not receiving food according to the prescribed menu, and allegations of illegal collection of money from prisoners.

One of the most serious findings reportedly involved the accommodation of juvenile inmates alongside older and hardened prisoners. Officials expressed concern that such arrangements could expose younger inmates to physical, psychological, and criminal influences, raising questions regarding compliance with prison regulations and inmate safety.

The inspection team also reportedly raised concerns that members of the prison administration left officials among the inmates without adequate security measures during the inspection. Authorities took these allegations seriously as they considered disciplinary action.

Following the findings, the government suspended Neeraj Kumar Jha from his position as Superintendent of Beur Central Jail. According to orders issued by the Directorate of Correctional Services, his headquarters during the suspension period have been designated as Bhagalpur Central Jail.

Meanwhile, Rajiv Kumar, Deputy Inspector General (Prisons), has been given the additional charge of Beur Jail Superintendent.

Sources indicate the investigation may not be limited to the suspended superintendent. Action could also be taken against other prison officials, including jailers, assistant superintendents, and other personnel found responsible for administrative lapses.

The Bihar government has reiterated its policy of zero tolerance toward corruption and administrative misconduct. Officials have stated that individuals found responsible for irregularities or violations of prison rules will face appropriate disciplinary and legal action.

Further decisions are expected after the completion of departmental inquiries and additional investigations into the functioning of the prison administration.
