Police ASI, Home Guard arrested by Odisha Vigilance in Bhubaneswar over taking bribe

Bhubaneswar, June 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Odisha Vigilance has arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police and a Home Guard driver of Mancheswar Police Station in Bhubaneswar for allegedly taking a bribe from a person to help him in a case and return his two mobile phones, a senior Vigilance official said on Thursday.

The arrested police officers were identified as Rajesh Kullu, ASI of Mancheswar Police Station, and Jyoti Ranjan Behera, a Home Guard driver.

According to Vigilance officials, Kullu was the Investigating Officer in a case involving the complainant. He allegedly demanded money to help the complainant in the case and to return his two mobile phones.

"ASI Kullu had earlier taken Rs 80,000 from the complainant in two instalments to help in the case. Later, on June 17, 2026, when the complainant approached ASI Kullu, he demanded additional Rs 20,000 for return of his mobile phones and directed him to pay the demanded bribe to Home Guard driver Behera," the Vigilance official said.

The vigilance sources claimed that the accused ASI had taken Rs 80,000 from the complainant in two instalments.

When the complainant again approached the accused ASI on Wednesday, he allegedly demanded another Rs 20,000 and asked the complainant to hand over the money to the Home Guard driver.

Acting on the complaint, a Vigilance team laid a trap on Wednesday.

Behera allegedly collected the Rs 20,000 bribe amount on the instructions of the ASI.

When the Vigilance team arrived, Behera allegedly threw the money into nearby bushes and tried to escape along with Kullu.

However, both the accused were caught by the Vigilance officials after a chase.

The Vigilance team recovered and seized the entire Rs 20,000 bribe amount.

"A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and further investigation is underway," Vigilance officials said.

Following the incident, ASI Kullu has been removed from service with immediate effect under the provisions of Article 311(2)(b) of the Constitution of India for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from an accused person for the release of mobile phones.

Two Home Guards, namely Home Guards Jyotiranjan Behera and Abdul Sarfaraj Khan, for their involvement in the matter, have been served one month's notice for termination of their services from the Home Guards organisation.
