Patna, June 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) The death of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari during a police encounter in Bihar's Bhojpur district has triggered a political controversy, with the State Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari on Thursday expressing concern over the circumstances surrounding the incident and calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Speaking at an event in Buxar, the Minister described the encounter as "unfortunate".
While he criticised the youth's conduct, particularly the viral social media videos in which he was seen brandishing a firearm, Minister Mithilesh Tiwari questioned whether the police had adequately examined the deceased youth's criminal background before resorting to force.
Mithilesh Tiwari said that even if police intervention was necessary, the objective should have been to incapacitate rather than cause a fatal outcome.
He emphasised that the state government has taken the matter seriously and noted that four police personnel have already been suspended pending further inquiry.
"The Bihar government has taken this matter seriously. Four police personnel have been suspended, and further investigation will be conducted. Action will be taken against whoever is found guilty," the Minister said.
The controversy stems from a video that circulated widely on social media showing Bharat Bhushan Tiwari pointing a pistol at police personnel.
Investigators identified the video as originating from Bilauti village under the jurisdiction of the Shahpur police station in Bhojpur district.
Bharat Bhushan Tiwari had shared the footage through his own social media account.
In a subsequent Facebook Live broadcast, he reportedly claimed that he was willing to surrender.
Police say that when a team reached the village on Wednesday morning to apprehend him, Tiwari opened fire, forcing officers to retaliate in self-defence.
He sustained gunshot injuries and was initially taken to Ara Sadar Hospital before being referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital in Patna, where he later died during treatment.
The incident has generated widespread anger in Bilauti village. When Tiwari's body was brought back to the area on Thursday, villagers staged a road blockade and protest, alleging that he had already surrendered before being shot.
Demonstrators placed the body on the road and demanded an impartial investigation into the encounter.
The protest later turned tense, with reports of stone-pelting and a police cane charge to disperse the crowd.
Villagers and family members have said that Tiwari had no significant criminal record and have questioned the police's version of events.
Authorities, meanwhile, have initiated departmental and administrative inquiries into the encounter, while the suspensions of the police officers involved remain in effect pending the outcome of the investigation.
