Laos boosts preparedness for flood risks in rainy season

Vientiane, June 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) Laos is stepping up efforts to strengthen flood management and improve urban environmental conditions in order to reduce flood risks and related impacts during the 2026 rainy season.

The National Water Resources Committee (NWRC) held its meeting to review and approve the 2026 flood response plan while assessing the readiness of relevant agencies in managing water resources, reservoirs, and flood risks across the country.

During the meeting on June 11, officials reported progress in key preparations, including the dissemination of regulations to hydropower operators, standardization of flood management procedures, appointment of local coordinators at dam sites, and a nationwide review of hydropower projects, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Discussions also covered weather and hydrological forecasts, flood modelling for the Mekong River and its tributaries, reservoir operations, irrigation systems, and urban flood mitigation measures, alongside proposed improvements to water-related legislation.

On Tuesday, a meeting was held in Vientiane focusing on the exchange of experiences and the discussion of ongoing challenges in urban management, particularly flooding, waste disposal, wastewater treatment, and drainage systems, as well as efforts to improve overall environmental quality in urban areas.

Participants reviewed current implementation progress, identified key difficulties, and proposed joint solutions to strengthen garbage management, improve drainage infrastructure, and enhance urban planning and organization. The discussions also highlighted the importance of closer cooperation between central and local authorities to ensure more effective urban governance.

On June 5, Laos reiterated its strong commitment to environmental protection and climate action during the observance of World Environment Day.

In his message marking the 53rd anniversary of World Environment Day and the 27th anniversary of Laos' National Environment Day, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone emphasised that the observance aims to raise awareness of the importance of environmental protection and climate action.

He noted that climate change is not a distant issue but an urgent challenge already affecting many countries, including Laos. The country remains highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as storms, floods, droughts and forest fires, which significantly impact socio-economic development, infrastructure, agriculture, food security and livelihoods.

The Lao government continues to prioritise climate action and has reaffirmed its commitment to working with the international community through the effective implementation of relevant policies and legislation, he said, calling for stronger cooperation from all sectors to protect forests, promote tree planting and reforestation, improve energy efficiency, reduce fossil fuel use, and expand clean and renewable energy.

As part of the observance, the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Environment organised a cleanup campaign across nine districts in Vientiane to promote collective responsibility for environmental protection, particularly in urban waste management, and to help create a cleaner, greener and more orderly city.
