Kolkata, June 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) With an aim to modernise the functioning of the West Bengal Police, the state police on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Union Home Ministry-controlled Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU).
The MoU was signed at the state secretariat Nabanna in the presence of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
With this, West Bengal joins states such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Assam that have signed similar agreements with RRU.
Speaking on the occasion, CM Adhikari said that although the state police's efficiency was once at its peak and met international standards, the previous Mamata Banerjee-led government did not utilise that efficiency for the benefit of the people.
He added that modern equipment necessary to increase police efficiency was not provided earlier, and the force had fallen short of public expectations due to low personnel numbers.
“Arrangements are being made to recruit more and bring transparency in recruitment,” he said.
Under the MoU, training will be conducted for all levels of police officers in the state.
“Training will cover modern-day crimes like cyber-crime, dark web, use of artificial intelligence in criminal activities and human trafficking, besides strengthening crime-detection activities like forensic science and border intelligence,” said the Chief Minister.
He emphasised that his main aim is to develop and modernise state police forces so they no longer depend on central armed police forces (CAPF) personnel to address critical law and order issues.
Since taking charge, CM Adhikari has repeatedly stressed impartial functioning of the state police to establish the “rule of law” and not the “rule of the ruler.”
