Assam: Debabrata Saikia seeks an AHRC probe into mob assault of couple

Guwahati, June 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) Former Assam Leader of Opposition and ex-MLA Debabrata Saikia has approached the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC), seeking an urgent probe into an alleged mob assault, harassment and public humiliation of a couple in the Kona Nadi area under Chauldhowa Police Station in Lakhimpur district.

In a memorandum submitted to the AHRC's Chairperson on Wednesday, Saikia termed the incident a “grave violation of human rights” and demanded exemplary action against all those involved.

According to the complaint, the couple was allegedly attacked by a group of people, physically assaulted in public, verbally abused and subjected to humiliation. The memorandum also alleged that the woman’s dignity was violated and that the couple’s business establishment was vandalised, causing severe financial losses.

Saikia argued that the incident amounted to a serious breach of the constitutional rights guaranteed under Articles 14, 19 and 21, which ensure equality, liberty, personal security and the right to live with dignity. He stated that acts such as mob violence, public humiliation, assault on women and destruction of property undermine the rule of law and raise concerns over public safety.

The Congress leader urged the Commission to take suo motu cognisance of the matter and seek detailed reports from the Lakhimpur district police administration and the officer-in-charge of Chauldhowa Police Station regarding the incident and the subsequent police response. He also called for a high-level and impartial investigation into the episode.

Among other demands, Saikia sought immediate identification and arrest of all accused persons, an inquiry into any alleged negligence by police or administrative officials, and interim compensation of at least Rs 5 lakh for the victim couple.

He further requested adequate compensation for the destruction of their business, protection for the victims and witnesses, free medical treatment, psychological counselling and legal aid.

The memorandum also urged the AHRC to recommend policy measures to prevent the recurrence of mob violence and ensure stricter enforcement of law and order across the state.
