Centre sanctions Rs 733.28 crore boost for Maha police modernisation

Mumbai, June 16 (SocialNews.XYZ) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for sanctioning a substantial package of Rs 733.28 crore for the modernisation of Maharashtra Police. He emphasised that the injection of funds will bridge critical gaps, transforming the department into a highly advanced, future-ready force.

CM Fadnavis on X said that under this scheme, 60 per cent of the funding will come from the Central Government and 40 per cent from the State Government. “Through this, the Maharashtra Police Force will become more equipped in many aspects such as maritime security, anti-drug campaigns, cyber security, greater use of AI technology, citizen safety, modern weapons, vehicles, and more,” he stated.

According to State government sources, the comprehensive modernisation blueprint is designed to shift the force from relying solely on manpower to one that wields advanced technological capabilities. The funds will be strategically utilised across several frontline security sectors, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration, coastal and maritime security, anti-narcotics crackdowns, and tactical hardware and mobility.

The funds will be used to implement predictive AI tools, data analytics and advanced software within regional cyber cells to counter high-tech fraud and organised digital crime networks, acquire high-speed patrol boats and sophisticated sonar/surveillance equipment to monitor Maharashtra’s extensive and strategically vulnerable 720-km coastline, and equip anti-drug squads with advanced technical scanners and intelligence-gathering tools to choke narcotics supply chains.

Further, the government will upgrade cyber labs to tackle the surging rate of online financial scams and identity theft, and procure next-generation weaponry, protective gear, and high-speed tactical vehicles to ensure swift response times and enhanced safety for citizens, women, and children.

The Centre’s approval for financial aid falls under the broader framework of the Central Government's Assistance to States for Modernisation of Police (ASUMP) scheme managed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Government sources said the central assistance comes at a time when the rapidly changing nature of crime, shifting away from traditional street offences toward complex cybercrime, deepfakes, online financial syndicates and sea-route drug trafficking, has made technical upgrades a matter of immediate national security.

As Mumbai and the wider State of Maharashtra remain prime targets for sophisticated financial crimes and maritime threats, the allocation of Rs 733.28 crore represents a vital step toward establishing a robust, AI-driven defence mechanism for the State.
