Shillong, June 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday said the Northeast has moved beyond decades of instability and is now witnessing an era of peace, political stability and rapid economic growth, positioning the region as a key driver of India’s development journey.
Speaking at the inauguration of the North East India Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition (NEIINFRA) 2026 in Shillong, Sangma said the region is increasingly aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making the Northeast an integral pillar of the country’s growth story.
Addressing a gathering of policymakers, investors, industry leaders and officials, the Chief Minister said Meghalaya itself has emerged as one of the fastest‑growing states in the country. He noted that the state ranks third nationally in GDP growth over the past five years, supported by a doubling of the state budget, a six‑fold increase in capital expenditure and substantial investments in infrastructure.
According to Sangma, Meghalaya has witnessed nearly Rs 50,000 crore worth of investments in road infrastructure, helping improve connectivity across the state and laying the foundation for future economic expansion.
Highlighting the objective of NEIINFRA 2026, the Chief Minister said the summit seeks to bring together governments, investors and industry stakeholders to identify opportunities and jointly address developmental challenges across the Northeast.
“The summit should not just be a programme but the beginning of a long journey and partnership that will take the government, private sector and the public to new heights in the days to come,” Sangma said.
The two‑day event has attracted more than 1,500 delegates and representatives from all eight Northeastern states, with discussions focusing on infrastructure, connectivity, logistics, urban development, energy and investment promotion.
Sangma said peace and stability in the region have significantly improved the investment climate and enabled governments to focus on long‑term economic planning and infrastructure creation.
He also reiterated the Northeast’s growing importance as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia, noting that enhanced connectivity projects and strategic investments could transform the region into a major trade and economic hub.
The Chief Minister said Meghalaya remains committed to leveraging infrastructure, tourism, information technology and entrepreneurship to attract investments and generate sustainable growth, while ensuring that the benefits of development reach people across the state and the wider Northeast region.
