MP: Jal Jeevan Mission ends water woes in Tribal Jhabua village

Jhabua, June 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) Until a few years ago, fetching drinking water was one of the most difficult daily tasks for the residents of Chavariya, a small tribal village in the Thandla block of Madhya Pradesh’s Jhabua district.

Women and young girls often had to walk several kilometres to carry pots of water from distant sources, spending hours every day on a task essential to survival.

Under the Central government’s Jal Jeevan Mission, a piped water supply system has been developed, ensuring that all 79 households in Chavariya receive clean drinking water through tap connections at their homes.

The availability of tap water has brought major relief to women, who previously had to arrange water for their families. The time and effort once spent on collecting water can now be used for household work, farming activities and caring for children.

Villagers say the change has improved their daily lives and reduced the stress associated with water scarcity, particularly during the summer months.

“Earlier, we had to spend several hours every day fetching water. Now, clean drinking water is available at our doorstep, which has made our lives much easier,” said a woman resident of the village, according to the government.

The access to safe drinking water has also improved hygiene and sanitation practices in the village. Families now have adequate water for drinking, cooking and other domestic needs throughout the year, it said. The scheme has contributed to better living conditions and enhanced the overall quality of life in the tribal settlement.

Apart from providing drinking water, the project has also created livelihood opportunities. Local youths have been engaged in the operation and maintenance of the village water supply system, generating employment and strengthening community participation in the management of the infrastructure.

According to officials of the Public Health Engineering Department, Chavariya reflects the broader impact of the Jal Jeevan Mission in remote and tribal regions of Madhya Pradesh.

“The objective of the mission is not only to provide tap water connections but also to improve health, dignity and quality of life in rural areas. The transformation witnessed in Chavariya demonstrates the positive impact of reliable drinking water facilities,” the government said in a statement.

The village’s journey from chronic water scarcity to assured tap water supply highlights how access to a basic service can transform rural life, particularly for women, while promoting health, social empowerment and economic opportunities.
