Manipur: Churachandpur villagers reap first legal harvest under NCB initiative

Churachandpur, June 11 (SocialNews.XYZ) A transformative chapter is unfolding as the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), in collaboration with Churachandpur Police and CSR partner Segula Technologies, celebrates the first successful harvest under its alternative cropping initiative, named Project HINICHI, in Manipur’s Churachandpur district.

Launched in April 2026, the project has already begun to yield tangible results, with villagers proudly reaping their first rich harvest of green peas. The initiative marks a decisive shift from illicit poppy cultivation to sustainable agriculture, empowering 124 households across 254 acres.

By providing essential crop inputs, agricultural training and market-linkage support, the project has enabled communities to embrace legal livelihoods while contributing to the broader vision of a Drug-Free India. For many families, this harvest symbolises not just food security but also dignity, stability and hope for a brighter future.

Officials noted that the programme is designed to break the cycle of dependency on narcotics cultivation by offering viable alternatives that ensure both economic and social resilience. Farmers who once relied on poppy fields are now finding prosperity in green peas, a crop that promises steady income and market demand.

The transition has also strengthened community bonds, as collective farming practices and shared training sessions have fostered cooperation among villagers.

The NCB emphasised that the success of Project HINICHI demonstrates how law enforcement, local administration and corporate social responsibility can converge to create a lasting impact. “From poppy fields to prosperity, this initiative is about empowering communities, strengthening livelihoods and advancing the national mission of a drug-free India,” the Bureau stated in its post.

As the first harvest reaches local markets, the project stands as a model for replication in other regions grappling with illicit cultivation. For Churachandpur’s farmers, the green pea fields are more than just crops; they are symbols of resilience, renewal and a future free from the shadows of narcotics.
