Ramesh Sippy Reflects on His Timeless Collaboration With Hema Malini

Veteran filmmaker Ramesh Sippy recently shared a deeply nostalgic account of his decades-long association with actress Hema Malini, revisiting a creative journey that spans nearly six decades of Indian cinema. Speaking at the press conference for The Dream Girl’s Diamond Jubilee Concert held on June 8, 2026, in Mumbai, Sippy highlighted how their professional relationship began in the late 1960s and evolved into one of Bollywood’s most memorable partnerships.

“Hema-ji and I go back a long way—it’s been almost 55 or 60 years... 57 or 58 years, I suppose. It all started around '69; her first film was released then, and she has been with me ever since,” Sippy said, recalling the early days of their collaboration. His words reflected not just admiration, but a sense of continuity rare in an industry known for constant change.

He went on to reflect on the impact of Seeta Aur Geeta, one of their most defining collaborations. “I hadn't expected the role of Basanti to turn out the way it did. After Seeta Aur Geeta—where she played both roles so well—I wondered what to ask of her next; the role wasn't huge, but it was fun,” he explained, referring to how her versatility opened new creative possibilities for filmmakers working with her.

Sippy also recalled Hema Malini’s exceptional command over dialogue and performance precision. “When Javed-saab narrated the dialogues, I couldn't even keep up with the speed at which she grasped and delivered them—it was amazing. Her delivery was fantastic; I didn't even need to tell her what to do,” he said, praising her instinctive understanding of character and scene work.

One of the most enduring legacies of their collaboration remains the iconic character of Basanti in Sholay. Sippy reflected, “As a director, I felt she had truly mastered the subject and the character. The flair she brought to the role of Basanti on screen was delightful, and I think it was a very memorable performance.” The character went on to become one of Indian cinema’s most beloved and culturally significant roles.

He further acknowledged Hema Malini’s range as an actor even before her superstardom. “She had already proven herself by playing both Seeta and Geeta, and even earlier, at just 19, she had played the role of a widow and a mother—she did excellent work,” he noted, underlining her early versatility and emotional depth on screen.

Sippy also mentioned their continued collaboration in later years, adding, “More recently—about 10 or 12 years ago—she did another film of mine, Shimla Mirch; she had a lovely role in that too, and she portrayed it beautifully.” This long professional association, he said, stands as a testament to mutual trust and creative respect.

The press conference was part of a larger celebration of Hema Malini’s six-decade journey in Indian cinema, marking her contribution as an actress, performer, and cultural icon.
