Bhopal/New Delhi, June 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) Madhya Pradesh BJP President Hemant Khandelwal on Wednesday said the BJP had no role in the rejection of Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha nomination and asked the Congress to look at its own issues.
“If there is a lack of consensus or internal conflict within the Congress, what can the BJP do about it? The BJP is not in power in Telangana; who provided the documents from there? Now you claim the BJP did something wrong... we did nothing wrong,” Khandelwal told reporters in Bhopal.
His comments came after the Congress called the rejection a “murder of democracy” and a “theft of the seat.” A 10-member Congress delegation met the Election Commission in Delhi on Wednesday. Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi led the team.
“The Returning Officer’s decision to cancel Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination is incorrect and not in accordance with the law. There is no legal provision supporting the grounds on which the nomination was cancelled,” Singhvi said after the meeting in New Delhi.
Singhvi said Natarajan had no criminal cases to disclose. “Natarajan did not face any criminal case that required disclosure; the court had merely issued a notice asking whether further proceedings should commence in the matter,” he explained. He added that the order was wrong and should be set aside.
“We made a detailed representation to the Election Commission. They rejected Ms Natarajan’s nomination, citing the absence of even ‘cognisance’, meaning there is no criminal case that she could have disclosed. The EC has the power to deliver justice and rectify wrongs,” Singhvi said.
The Congress delegation included KC Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala, Sachin Pilot, Bhupesh Baghel, and Vivek Tankha. Umang Singhar, Leader of the Opposition in the MP Assembly, said the EC assured them a decision would be taken within two hours.
“We hope and trust the EC will realise that this creates an uneven playing field that strikes at the heart of democracy. This is a completely egregious, blatant, and patently unlawful order. We request that it be set aside immediately,” Singhvi said.
The Returning Officer (RO) of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly had rejected Natarajan’s nomination on Tuesday, citing irregularities in her affidavit related to a case in a Hyderabad court.
Meanwhile, in Madhya Pradesh, Congress workers held protests on Wednesday. In Bhopal, workers reached the Chief Electoral Officer’s office. They found the gate closed and hung a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh uniform on the gate. State Congress leaders are holding a continuous sit-in outside the EC office in Bhopal. Congress workers are also holding sit-ins at the block, district, and assembly levels across the state.
