Delhi L-G sets June 15 deadline for DDA to finish desilting of drains

New Delhi, June 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) Delhi Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu on Tuesday set June 15 as the deadline for the Delhi Development Authority to complete desilting of rainwater drains ahead of the monsoon, officials said.

Sandhu, who is also the DDA Chairman, has been personally monitoring the desilting operations being undertaken by various agencies.

During a meeting with DDA officials, Sandhu was informed that the Authority has completed almost 70 per cent of the desilting work.

A DDA official said that an extensive desilting drive of stormwater drains under DDA's jurisdiction has been undertaken to ensure monsoon preparedness and minimise the risk of waterlogging across the city.

The desilting work was initiated well in advance, as per the directions of the Lieutenant Governor, with the objective of ensuring smooth drainage of rainwater, preventing road flooding, reducing traffic congestion, maintaining hygiene, and improving the overall upkeep of public infrastructure during the monsoon.

As part of this drive, the DDA is carrying out desilting of 69 kilometres of stormwater drains in Narela and 192 kilometres in Dwarka. The work involves removing accumulated silt, debris, vegetation, and other obstructions that hinder the free flow of rainwater.

The desilting operations are progressing in a mission mode, and approximately 70 per cent of the work has already been completed, said the official in a statement.

The LG has directed that the remaining work be completed by June 15, before the onset of the monsoon, the statement said.

Regular inspections and monitoring are being carried out by DDA officials to ensure timely completion and adherence to quality standards, it said.

The initiative is expected to significantly improve drainage efficiency, reduce waterlogging, and facilitate smoother traffic flow during the rainy season.

Sandhu had earlier instructed that, to ensure people in the national capital do not face waterlogging, the DDA must undertake a comprehensive desilting exercise in a mission mode.

The Delhi Development Authority remains committed to strengthening urban infrastructure and ensuring that all necessary measures are in place to provide a safe, clean and convenient environment for city residents during the monsoon, the statement said.
