National Award-winning Malayalam actor Salim Kumar was cremated with full State honours at his residence in North Paravur, Ernakulam district, on Sunday, as family members, film personalities, political leaders, and thousands of admirers gathered to pay their final respects. The beloved actor passed away on Saturday night at the age of 56, leaving Malayalam cinema and audiences across India mourning the loss of one of its most versatile performers.

Before the funeral, Salim Kumar's mortal remains were kept at Paravur Town Hall from 9 am to 1 pm, allowing the public to bid farewell to the actor who entertained audiences for more than three decades. As a mark of respect, the Kerala government accorded State honours during the funeral, with the District Collector placing a wreath on behalf of the government and police personnel conducting ceremonial honours, including a bugle salute. The state also bore the expenses related to the funeral arrangements.

In its condolence message, the Kerala government expressed "profound grief" over the demise of the acclaimed actor, recalling his remarkable achievements, including the National Film Award for Best Actor for Adaminte Makan Abu in 2010 and the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor for Achanurangatha Veedu. Over a career spanning more than 300 films, Salim Kumar evolved from a comedy icon into one of Malayalam cinema's most respected character actors, earning praise for performances in films such as Ayalum Njanum Thammil while also directing Karutha Joothan.

Among those who paid tribute was Kerala leader V.D. Satheesan, who remembered the actor as both a colleague and a close friend. Speaking to the media, Satheesan said, “Actor Salim Kumar had a face and expressions that Malayalis can never forget. I have lost someone who was like a brother to me.” He also recalled the actor's support during election campaigns and described him as a man of strong political convictions who remained committed to his beliefs throughout his life.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also mourned the veteran actor's passing, describing him as a versatile performer whose memorable roles left a lasting impact on Indian cinema. “Deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor Shri Salim Kumar Ji. Over the course of a distinguished career, he made a mark with his versatility and memorable performances across a wide range of roles,” the Prime Minister wrote on X. Salim Kumar was admitted to a hospital in Kochi before his demise and is survived by his wife Sunitha and their two sons, Chandu and Aaromal.
