Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar blames LDF, UDF over rising wildlife attacks

Thiruvananthapuram, June 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) BJP state president and MLA Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Monday accused successive LDF and UDF governments of failing to address the growing threat of human-wildlife conflict in Kerala, alleging that people in the state’s hilly regions are being left to face repeated attacks without adequate protection.

Chandrasekhar said five people had lost their lives in wildlife attacks in Kerala in the past two weeks alone, but the government had failed to take effective preventive measures.

He alleged that the concerned department had displayed criminal negligence despite the increasing threat to human life.

Referring to the death of Mariyammal at Suryanelli in Idukki, who was killed in a wild elephant attack while taking her son to school, the BJP leader said the incident reflected the fear and insecurity faced by people living near forest fringes.

The child injured in the attack continues to undergo treatment.

“People are now unable to live without fear even in their own villages,” he said.

Chandrasekhar cited government records to highlight the scale of the crisis, claiming that wildlife attacks between 2016 and 2025 had resulted in 1,128 deaths and 8,480 injuries across Kerala.

He said attacks by elephants, tigers and wild boars alone accounted for 260 fatalities during the period.

Elephant attacks between 2020 and 2025 had claimed 102 lives, while 344 deaths were reported from wildlife attacks between 2021 and 2025, he added.

He said the Centre had provided states with financial assistance and wider powers to tackle human-animal conflict through measures such as solar fencing, barriers, rapid response teams, monitoring of vulnerable areas and management of elephant movement corridors.

However, Chandrasekhar alleged that Kerala had failed to properly utilise the available funds and legal provisions to protect people.

He also criticised delays in providing compensation to victims and their families.

Accusing both the LDF and UDF of adopting similar approaches, he said the UDF had failed to act despite raising the issue while in opposition, while the LDF’s decade-long rule had not produced a permanent solution.

He demanded the immediate use of modern technology, including drones, AI-based surveillance and real-time warning systems, to prevent wildlife from entering human settlements.

“Protecting the lives and property of citizens is the government’s primary responsibility,” he said.
