Ulaanbaatar, June 8 (SocialNews.XYZ) An Indian delegation led by Ladakh Lt Governor Vinai Saxena arrived in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar on Monday to bring back the holy relics of Lord Buddha‘s two chief disciples, Arahant Sariputra and Arahant Maudgalyayana.
“On 08 June 2026, the Indian delegation led by the Hon'ble Lt Governor of Ladakh, Mr Vinai Saxena, arrived at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia by a Special Indian Force Flight to take back to India the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha‘s two Chief Disciples, Arahant Sariputra and Arahant Maudgalyayana,” the Indian Embassy in Mongolia posted on X.
The visiting delegation was received at the airport by Tserennadmid Byambadoo, Governor of Arkhangai Province of Mongolia, Indian Ambassador Atul Malhari Gotsurve and senior monks from the Gandan Monastery.
The relics were brought to Mongolia from India for a 10-day exposition at the Gandantegchenling Monastery from May 31 to June 9.
Enjoying the status of the Head of State in terms of protocol and security, the relics arrived in Ulaanbaatar by a special Indian Air Force (IAF) flight from New Delhi, accompanied by a high-level delegation led by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.
The nearly 45-member delegation also included senior officers and reputed monks from India and Sri Lanka. The International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) was also actively involved in the organisation of the important exposition.
Together, the Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka, the National Museum of India under the Ministry of Culture, in association with the Government of Madhya Pradesh, brought the holy relics to Mongolia at the request of the Gandan Tegchenling Monastery.
"As we arrive and carry the sacred body relics of Arhant Sāriputta and Arhant Mahāmoggalāna — the two chief disciples of Lord Buddha — from the soil of India to the beautiful land of Mongolia, we are not merely transporting historical antiquities but we are carrying a living spark of enlightenment, a cosmic message of peace, and the timeless spiritual energy of the Tathagata’s closest companions," stated Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.
Devotees in Ulaanbaatar had been lining up from early morning every day to pay homage to the holy relics at the Gandantegchenling Monastery.
In June 2022, four sacred Kapilavastu Relics of the Buddha were taken from the National Museum of India to Mongolia for an 11-day exposition, marking their first visit to the country in 29 years.
According to the Embassy, Ladakh and Arkhangai signed an MOU for cooperation in October 2025 on diverse sectors, which include cultural exchange, tourism promotion, trade, education, animal and sheep husbandry, agriculture and horticulture, astrophysics, and sports.
