TN engineering admissions: Registrations cross 3 lakh-mark; counselling schedule may be deferred

Chennai, June 7 (SocialNews.XYZ) The registrations for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026 have crossed the three-lakh mark, reflecting sustained interest in engineering courses among students across the state.

According to official data, a total of 3,01,519 candidates registered for the admission process. Of these, 2,43,476 applicants paid the application fee, while 2,23,599 candidates completed document verification and submission, a crucial step for inclusion in the rank list and participation in counselling.

Higher Education Department officials said the final figures could witness a marginal increase once the consolidated data is compiled. However, the overall trend suggests that applications have remained largely on par with the previous year despite expectations of a notable rise in registrations.

Officials had anticipated higher numbers this year amid uncertainties surrounding national-level professional entrance examinations and the growing preference among students to keep engineering as an alternative career option.

However, the latest figures indicate that demand has remained steady rather than witnessing a significant jump.

The current numbers are broadly similar to last year’s admissions cycle, when more than three lakh candidates registered for TNEA and around 2.5 lakh students completed document submission.

Officials noted that the present admissions season has followed a similar pattern. The stability comes after a sharp increase recorded in 2025.

The number of candidates featured in the TNEA rank list last year rose by 20.9 per cent to 2,41,641, compared to nearly two lakh students in 2024. It marked the steepest increase in recent years and highlighted the growing interest in engineering education across Tamil Nadu.

The Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) is scheduled to publish the TNEA 2026 rank list on June 29, which will determine eligibility and ranking for admissions to engineering colleges across the state.

Meanwhile, the counselling schedule is yet to be finalised. Officials indicated that the process could begin later than usual as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has not yet released its academic calendar and counselling guidelines for the upcoming academic year.

With more than three lakh aspirants seeking engineering seats, students and parents are now awaiting the publication of the rank list and the counselling timetable that will decide admissions to hundreds of engineering institutions across Tamil Nadu.
