Bhopal Gas Tragedy greatest example of tampering with nature: CM Yadav

Bhopal, June 5 (SocialNews.XYZ) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday described the Bhopal Gas Tragedy as the “greatest example of tampering with nature,” stating that the recent disposal of Union Carbide waste at Indore has erased a 40-year-old stigma from the city’s soil.

“After 40 years, the state government has successfully disposed of the waste lying at the Union Carbide factory, thereby erasing the stigma of the gas tragedy from Bhopal’s soil,” he said.

The Chief Minister stated this while addressing the state-level Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0 campaign on World Environment Day at the Kushabhau Thakre Auditorium.

The Bhopal Gas Tragedy occurred on the night of December 2–3, 1984, when methyl isocyanate gas leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal. Around 337 metric tonnes of hazardous waste had remained stored at the abandoned factory site for four decades, drawing continuous concern from residents and environmental groups.

The state government recently transported and incinerated the waste at a Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility in Pithampur, Indore, under the supervision of the Central Pollution Control Board and the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board.

With the disposal complete, Yadav said the state is now moving towards the proper management of the Union Carbide land.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the state government is working with full commitment towards environmental conservation. Work is proceeding with a spirit of reverence to conserve rivers, wells, stepwells, and ponds across the state under the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan,” the Chief Minister said.

He inaugurated the event by lighting a ceremonial lamp and planting saplings of Swarna Champa, Sita Ashok, Ramphal, and Amla in the auditorium complex.

Yadav said several measures are being taken to promote clean and green energy. “Rapid progress is being made on solar, wind, biomass, and hydroelectric projects to promote green energy in the state. Work on major green energy projects is underway at various locations, including Sanchi and Khajuraho,” he said.

On wildlife, he said Madhya Pradesh has set an exemplary model of coexistence. “In addition to the rehabilitation of cheetahs, wild buffaloes have also been brought to the state from Assam,” he said.

The Chief Minister added that the Pollution Control Board has fixed a 30-day timeframe for industrial permissions and three units continuously monitor pollution levels. Display boards showing the Air Quality Index have been installed in the city to raise public awareness, he said.
