Odisha: BJD seeks OHRC intervention in alleged custodial death in Ganjam

Bhubaneswar, June 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) A Biju Janata Dal (BJD) delegation on Wednesday met the Chairperson of the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC), seeking intervention in the alleged custodial torture and death of a man in Kabisuryanagar in Ganjam district.

The delegation, led by senior party leader and former MLA Bhrugu Baxipatra, raised several concerns over the incident and urged the Commission to take appropriate action.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Baxipatra said the delegation highlighted “important and valid points” related to the case.

He alleged that the deceased, identified as Sushant Sahu, died due to police torture, despite no FIR being registered against him.

“Our first question is on what grounds he was taken to the police station and why he was allegedly subjected to torture for seven days. The police have violated established rules, regulations and Supreme Court guidelines on custodial detention and torture,” he said.

Baxipatra further said that Sahu was physically challenged and a beneficiary of disability pension from the state government. He was also the sole earning member of his family, comprising his wife and four children.

The delegation urged the Commission to recommend immediate compensation and rehabilitation support for the bereaved family.

“We have requested the Commission to direct the government to provide adequate compensation, support the children’s education and livelihood, and ensure employment for the deceased’s wife,” he said.

Raising concerns over the probe, Baxipatra alleged that no FIR has been registered against the police personnel involved in the incident.

“Our key demand is that an FIR be lodged against the police officials responsible for the alleged custodial death,” he added.

The BJD delegation also demanded a thorough inquiry into the incident along with legal action against the accused personnel.

According to Baxipatra, the Commission heard their submissions and assured that appropriate steps would be taken within its jurisdiction to ensure justice.

“The Commission assured us that whatever is possible within its purview will be done to provide justice to Sushant Sahu and his family,” he said.

According to allegations by family members, the victim, Susant Sahu, a native of Subalaya village in Ganjam district, was brought to Kabisuryanagar police station on May 25 during a raid and detained for questioning in connection with a case related to illegal stone blasting.

Earlier, two people had reportedly been arrested in the same case. However, Susant’s involvement was allegedly not established. It has been alleged that he was subjected to custodial torture during his seven-day detention.

On Sunday, he was reportedly handed over to his family members in a critical condition. After receiving preliminary treatment at Aska hospital, he was referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where doctors declared him dead on Monday.

This has triggered massive outrage, prompting the suspension of three police officials and the withdrawal of an under-training IPS officer who was holding independent charge of the Kabisuryanagar police station.
