Jai Courtney and Olivia Colman Lead Wild Romantic Satire 'The Fox' in First Teaser Trailer

Australian cinema is getting delightfully strange once again with The Fox, the upcoming romantic satire from filmmaker Dario Russo. Madman Films has officially dropped the first teaser trailer for the indie comedy, teasing a bizarre and darkly funny story packed with shape-shifting animals, relationship chaos, and supernatural twists. Described as an “absurdly comic Australian folktale,” the film already has movie lovers comparing it to cult favourites like The Lobster and Ruby Sparks.

The film stars Jai Courtney as Nick, a wealthy and good-natured fox hunter whose life spirals after discovering his fiancée Kori is cheating on him. Emily Browning plays Kori, while Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman voices a mysterious talking fox who offers Nick an unbelievable solution to fix his failing relationship. The teaser promises a blend of romance, fantasy, satire, and unsettling comedy that feels both hilarious and deeply weird.

According to the film’s synopsis, Nick captures a rogue fox one night, only to discover the creature possesses magical powers. In exchange for her freedom, the Fox promises to help him create the “perfect partner.” Her plan involves pushing Kori into a magical hole capable of transforming her personality entirely. When Kori returns, she initially appears to be everything Nick ever wanted — but her increasingly bizarre behaviour soon makes him regret interfering with nature and human emotion.

The supporting cast adds even more excitement to the project. Legendary actor Sam Neill appears as a talking magpie, while familiar faces like Damon Herriman, Claudia Doumit, Zlatko Burić, Frankie J. Holden, Heather Mitchell, and Kim Gyngell round out the ensemble. The unusual cast and quirky concept suggest The Fox could become one of the most talked-about indie films of 2026.

What makes The Fox especially intriguing is how it mixes fantasy elements with commentary on modern relationships, control, and unrealistic expectations in love. Much like The Lobster, the film appears ready to explore emotional insecurity through absurd humour and surreal storytelling. The teaser’s eerie visuals and dry comedic tone hint at a movie that is equal parts romance, satire, and psychological fable.

Written and directed by Dario Russo, The Fox is scheduled to release on October 29, 2026. With its bizarre premise, star-studded cast, and offbeat humour, the film is already shaping up to be one of the most unique indie releases on next year’s calendar.
