Mumbai police bust purse-snatching gang targeting women walkers

Mumbai, May 25 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Mumbai police have achieved a breakthrough in unravelling the mystery of purse/chain snatching during morning walks in the Taloja area and, during the probe, have also stumbled upon other such rackets operating in other parts of the city.

The police have taken the accused, a juvenile, into custody and recovered stolen cash amounting to over Rs 1.85 from his possession.

The police crackdown on the purse snatching gang began after a recent incident in an upscale society in the Taloja region, sending ripples across the city.

According to information shared by the police, the 49-year-old Shashikala Sanilkanth Mishra, a resident of Arihant Amodini Society in Sector 24, Taloja, was out for a morning walk on April 17, when three unidentified miscreants, riding on a motorcycle, forcibly snatched her purse and fled the scene. Based on this complaint, a case was registered at the Taloja Police Station.

Given the sensitive nature of the case, the Taloja Police launched a drive to trace and trap the gang members. Initially, the police had no leads other than a physical description of the accused, but through diligent planning, they succeeded in foiling the plot.

The police team scoured through approximately 120 CCTV footage clips from various localities, including Taloja, Kharghar, Kamothe, Sanpada, Vashi, Mankhurd, Chembur, Govandi, and Tilak Nagar. Based on rigorous technical analysis and intelligence gathered through confidential sources, the police finally succeeded in tracking down the accused and took the juvenile involved in the gang into custody.

While the one involved in the Taloja incident is reported to be a minor, the police also came across 5 separate cases involving a chain-snatching gang - active across regions like Taloja, Kharghar, and Kamothe areas.

Through intense interrogation, and with the assistance of the juvenile accused, a total of five theft cases have been solved — including two registered at the Taloja Police Station, two at the Kharghar Police Station, and one at the Kamothe Police Station. The detained juvenile has been sent to a juvenile reform home in Karjat.
