Jain community protests Rewa hit-and-run in MP, seeks SIT, judicial probe

Bhopal, May 25 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Jain community has launched protests across Madhya Pradesh and other parts of the country against the hit-and-run incident in Rewa on May 20 that resulted in the death of two Jain Sadhvis and left a third critically injured.

Organisations including Rashtriya Jain Shasan and Ekta Sangh have strongly condemned the accident, describing it as a shocking attack on Jain ascetics.

The tragic incident occurred near the Collectorate office in Rewa’s Civil Lines area when a speeding car allegedly mowed down three Sadhvis who were walking as part of their religious foot journey at the edge of the road.

Sadhvi Shrutmati Mata from Sagar district died on the spot, while another Sadhvi also succumbed to her injuries. The third Sadhvi, currently battling for life at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Rewa, remains in critical condition on ventilator support.

The driver, identified as Rashid Ali Shah, fled the scene but was later arrested after a long chase. The Jain community has raised serious doubts over the nature of the accident. Community leaders have claimed that video footage clearly shows the car swerving from the centre of the road and deliberately hitting the peacefully walking Sadhvis, suggesting a possible conspiracy rather than a mere accident.

They have demanded immediate registration of a murder case against the driver. The community has put forward several key demands, including the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for a thorough and impartial probe, preservation of all CCTV footage related to the incident, and a fast-track court hearing for crimes against ascetics.

They have also called for the implementation of a national ascetics protection policy and strict protocols to ensure the safety of Jain “Munis” (monks) and Sadhvis during their religious journeys.

Anger within the community is rising rapidly. Leaders have warned that if firm and swift action is not taken, they will launch a Bharat Bandh and Jail Bharo movement across the country.

Peaceful demonstrations have already begun in several cities, with more major protests planned for May 25 in places like Bhopal, Indore, Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai.

Senior Jain monks and prominent figures, including Rajya Sabha MP Naveen Jain, have expressed deep sorrow and appealed for justice.

The Madhya Pradesh government has assured strict action, but the community continues to press for accountability and long-term measures to protect ascetics on public roads.
