Sanjay Suri Opens Up About ‘Intergenerational Trauma’ at ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’ Trailer Launch

The trailer launch of Main Vaapas Aaunga turned into an emotional and thought-provoking evening as actor Sanjay Suri delivered a heartfelt speech about migration, displacement, love, and what he called “intergenerational trauma.” The actor, who plays a pivotal role in the upcoming film directed by Imtiaz Ali, spoke passionately about the emotional depth of the story and why it resonated with him on a deeply personal level.

Addressing the audience during the event, Sanjay Suri shared how his conversations with Imtiaz Ali went far beyond the script. Reflecting on their early discussions, the actor said, “When I met Imtiaz Sir—as Sharvari mentioned—I found myself talking quite a lot. We were conversing—specifically, we were discussing what happens when a person becomes a refugee; we spoke of migration, displacement, the Partition, hatred, and love. And he said something to me: ‘I want to make a film about the opening of the heart. There is so much hatred in the world; what we need is an opening of the heart.’”

The actor continued by explaining how memories, love, and trauma often travel across generations. “Love and affection—some of it resides in memories, while some is lived out in the present moment. The impact of what you do today can last for years to come; there is a term for this: ‘intergenerational trauma.’ It is something that many people carry with them,” he said. Suri also added that despite the emotional and historical weight of the subject, the film remains, at its core, a deeply moving love story.

Sanjay Suri further revealed that his own experiences helped him connect with the narrative. “Having personally witnessed displacement myself, I connected with the narrative on a very deep level. There are still so many individuals around us today—people who were alive before 1947—who can share their own oral histories of that era,” he shared. The actor praised Imtiaz Ali’s storytelling sensibility, saying that the filmmaker has crafted something truly rare for Indian cinema.

Praising the film’s uniqueness, Suri said, “I believe he has crafted a story that is truly unique. And—considering both the writer and the director within him—I think this film will be one of a kind. I would go so far as to say it will remain so for decades to come.” He also compared the emotional and historical significance of the project to acclaimed partition-based films like Pinjar, pointing out how rarely such stories are explored on the big screen today.

The actor concluded his speech on a warm and emotional note, saying, “Congratulations to everyone; it is truly a pleasure to be here with all of you. Thank you.” His words struck a chord with the audience, adding even more anticipation for the film’s release.

Starring Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina, and Naseeruddin Shah, Main Vaapas Aaunga is set during the backdrop of the 1947 Partition and explores themes of cross-generational love, memory, longing, and belonging. Featuring music by A. R. Rahman, the film is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 12, 2026.
