Kolkata, May 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday came under sharp attack from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders after she approached the Calcutta High Court over alleged post-poll violence in the state, while the Trinamool Congress defended her move, saying she was fighting for the people.
Reacting to the development, BJP MLA Sumita Sinha dismissed the allegations of post-poll violence and questioned the basis of the legal move.
"There was no post-poll violence at all, so what will they do about it? Any lawyer can make up and say many things, but the fact is that no post-poll violence actually took place," Sinha told IANS.
BJP MLA Sajal Ghosh also targeted Mamata Banerjee, calling her actions "drama".
"She is just acting, let her act, we have nothing to do with it. Whatever drama she is doing, let her do it. Now it is over; she is the past now. There is no point in talking about it anymore," Ghosh said.
Another BJP MLA, Ashok Dinda, said the Opposition Trinamool Congress would face problems if the 2021 post-poll violence cases were revisited in the court.
"Where did the post-poll violence happen -- at their homes? She (Mamata Banerjee) has become a lawyer now; she had even gone to the Supreme Court regarding the Special intensive Revision issue, but nothing came out of it. If they (Trinamool Congress) take the 2021 post-poll violence files to court, they themselves will get trapped, because nothing happened in 2026," Dinda added.
He also said that approaching the court was everyone's Constitutional right.
"Anyone can approach the court; its doors are open for everyone. It is a Constitutional right. They are free to go -- we have no problem with it," he added.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh defended Mamata Banerjee and said she remained connected to the people at all times.
"Mamata Banerjee is a leader who always stays connected with the people and remains on the ground among them in different roles. Today, she is there in the role of an advocate, fighting for the public," he said.
The remarks come amid a fresh political confrontation between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress over allegations surrounding post-poll violence in the recently concluded West Bengal polls.
