Bhopal, May 14 (SocialNews.XYZ) Police have arrested all seven accused in connection with the assault on a Muslim youth in Bhopal that triggered communal tension and protests in the Old City area.
Assistant Police Commissioner Govindpura Aditi B. Saxena said all seven accused named in the First Information Report have now been arrested.
“All seven persons named in the First Information Report, including main accused Vijendra Prajapati, have been arrested. Five were arrested on Tuesday night and two on Thursday,” Saxena told IANS on Thursday.
The arrested persons have been identified as Vijendra Prajapati, Rohit Singh, Jeetu Kushwah, Ranjit Suryavanshi, Lala Ram Meena, Prateek, and Ramesh.
Police have booked them under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings and Section 291 for rioting.
The incident took place on May 10 when Arif Khan was allegedly assaulted by activists linked to a Hindu organisation at a hotel in Bhopal.
According to police, Khan was beaten, stripped semi-naked, and had ink and cow dung smeared on his face before being handed over to police personnel.
The incident sparked outrage among members of the Muslim community, with hundreds of people staging protests in the Old City on Tuesday, demanding immediate arrests and strict action against the accused.
Following the protests, tension escalated in some parts of the Old City, where incidents of stone-pelting were reported, prompting the authorities to impose Section 144 as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
Police said a separate case has been registered in connection with the violence, and a few people have been taken into custody.
“Three persons involved in violence have been detained, and more are to be arrested as the identification of accused persons is underway,” Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar told IANS.
With Friday prayers expected to draw large gatherings, Kumar said police personnel have been put on alert across sensitive areas of the city.
“Police have been put on alert mode to avoid any further escalation of violence in the city during Friday’s namaz in the Old Bhopal city area. Those who will try to disrupt law and order in the city will face action,” Kumar said.
He also assured a fair probe into the incident.
“My appeal is that the police will conduct a fair and thorough investigation and all necessary action will be taken,” he added.
Meanwhile, Bhopal City Qazi Syed Mushtaq Ali Nadvi appealed to residents to maintain peace and avoid being misled.
“Police have arrested the accused persons, and they have assured action. I would appeal to the people not to create unrest or disrupt the peace of Bhopal. I would also urge leaders not to mislead Muslim youths for political purposes,” Nadvi told IANS.
