Swanand Kirkire Slams Toyota India Over "Endless Spam Calls", Sparks Massive Online Debate on Data Privacy

Lyricist, singer, and actor Swanand Kirkire has triggered a major online storm after publicly calling out Toyota India in a series of strongly worded posts on X, accusing the company of mishandling customer data and flooding him with repeated sales and insurance calls after purchasing a vehicle.

In his first post, Swanand Kirkire expressed frustration over what he described as an overwhelming wave of unsolicited calls following his car purchase. He alleged that his contact details were shared with multiple insurance companies, resulting in constant marketing calls and automated outreach, including bot-generated responses from call centres. He also questioned the ethics of such practices, pointing out the burden it places on employees who handle customer complaints.

In a follow-up post, he escalated the issue further, stating that even automated systems had begun calling him with mechanical voice interactions, repeatedly asking questions. He demanded that the company stop using bots and instead ensure proper human customer support. He also tagged regulatory authorities including TRAI and other consumer grievance platforms, formally labeling his posts as complaints.

The actor-lyricist’s posts quickly went viral, igniting a heated discussion on digital privacy, data sharing practices, and aggressive marketing tactics in India’s automobile and insurance sectors. Many users responded by sharing similar experiences, claiming that the issue is not limited to one brand but is widespread across multiple car manufacturers.

A large section of online users suggested that the data may not only be coming from dealerships or manufacturers but potentially from broader vehicle registration systems, including RTO-linked databases, raising even more serious questions about how customer information is accessed and circulated.

Toyota India responded to the controversy by acknowledging the concern and offering to address the issue through direct communication, but the debate had already gained momentum across social platforms by then. Several users also advised activating DND services or escalating complaints through official regulatory channels for faster resolution.

Swanand Kirkire, known for his acclaimed work in Hindi and Marathi cinema as a lyricist, writer, actor, and playback singer, has rarely been seen in such a direct public confrontation, making the posts even more attention-grabbing. His comments have now turned into a broader conversation about consumer rights, privacy, and corporate accountability in the digital age.

As the posts continue to circulate widely, the incident has evolved from a personal grievance into a larger debate on how customer data is handled in India’s fast-growing automobile ecosystem.
