Punjab Police bust cross-border drug module, seize 12 kg heroin; 3 held

Chandigarh, May 3 (SocialNews.XYZ) Acting swiftly on specific intelligence inputs, the Counterintelligence wing of Punjab Police has busted a narcotics smuggling module in Amritsar and arrested three accused, recovering 12 kg of heroin, officials said on Sunday.

The operation was carried out near a toll plaza on the Amritsar–Chabal road in Tarn Taran district, where the suspects were intercepted and taken into custody. The seizure is considered significant in the ongoing crackdown against cross-border drug trafficking networks operating in the border state.

According to preliminary investigations, the arrested individuals were in contact with a Pakistan-based smuggler and were allegedly receiving and distributing narcotics consignments on his directions. Officials indicated that the accused were part of a larger network engaged in the illegal supply chain of heroin across regions.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at the State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) police station in Amritsar under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police said further investigation is underway to trace both forward and backward linkages of the network, including suppliers, handlers, and potential receivers.

Senior officials said efforts are being intensified to identify the entire chain involved in the smuggling racket, including financial transactions and logistical support systems. The role of cross-border handlers and any local collaborators is also being probed in detail.

The Punjab Police reiterated its commitment to making the state drug-free and said such operations will continue with greater intensity. "We are determined to break the backbone of narcotics networks and ensure the safety and well-being of citizens," an official statement said.

The development comes amid sustained efforts by security agencies to tighten surveillance along vulnerable routes and enhance coordination between various enforcement units to prevent the inflow of drugs into the state.
