A Runaway Chicken Takes Center Stage in a Bold New Tale of Survival and Secrets

There’s something unexpectedly gripping about a story told through the eyes of an animal, and the upcoming film Hen—also known as The Hen or Kota—leans fully into that idea with striking originality. Hungarian filmmaker György Pálfi brings audiences a visually rich and emotionally layered journey that follows a seemingly ordinary chicken navigating an extraordinary world. With its first official trailer now unveiled by Madman Films, the film is already turning heads for its unusual premise and bold storytelling.

At the heart of the film is a Leghorn chicken who escapes the harsh confines of an industrial farm, setting off on a journey that feels both intimate and expansive. Shot entirely across the coastal landscapes of Greece, the film trades traditional human-centered narratives for a perspective that is both fresh and quietly profound. Interestingly, the lead role isn’t played by just one star—eight real Hungarian chickens step into the spotlight, each bringing life to the character in their own way. Their names—Eszti, Szandi, Feri, Enci, Eti, Enikő, Nóra, and Anett—add a charming layer of personality to the production.

As the story unfolds, the runaway hen finds herself in the chicken coop of a struggling seaside restaurant. But this is no peaceful refuge. The establishment, run by an elderly owner portrayed by Yannis Kokiasmenos, is entangled in a web of criminal activity linked to human smuggling. Through the hen’s watchful eyes, viewers are drawn into a world shaped by desperation, greed, and survival. It’s a clever narrative device that allows the film to tackle heavy themes without losing its unique tone.

What sets Hen apart is how it blends the simplicity of an animal’s journey with the complexity of human conflict. As the chicken fights to protect her eggs and carve out a safe space, she becomes an accidental observer of the darker sides of humanity. The film doesn’t shy away from exploring issues like exploitation and the migrant crisis, using the microcosm of the restaurant to reflect broader societal tensions. It’s storytelling that feels both grounded and allegorical at the same time.

Co-written by Pálfi and Zsófia Ruttkay, the film promises a narrative that is as thought-provoking as it is visually compelling. With its May release on the horizon, Hen is shaping up to be one of the more unconventional cinematic experiences of the year—one that dares to ask big questions through the quiet resilience of a small, feathered protagonist.
