Sanjay Dutt attended the event alongside Maanayata Dutt, Subhash Ghai, Jyoti Deshpande, and Aksha Kamboj, where he spoke openly about returning to such a legendary character. When asked about the pressure of stepping back into Ballu’s shoes, his response was direct and confident.
He said, “Look, I don't work under pressure. Whenever I step onto the set—and let me tell you the most important thing—the script is paramount. That is the single most important element. And regarding that—whether it takes six months or eight months—as far as Subhash-ji is concerned, I’m going to pester him relentlessly! I’ll be involved in every aspect—I’ll even pester him about the music! Ultimately, however, the true hero of any film is the script itself.”
He further added, “And until that script reaches the required standard—until it hits that specific level of quality—I don't think we’ll even proceed to the floor (start filming). And like I said, I simply don't work under pressure. We'll just figure it out once we get to the set.”
The conversation soon shifted to the emotional and cultural identity of Khalnayak, a film that became a landmark in Indian cinema. Reflecting on its legacy and whether the sequel will retain its original essence, Dutt was firm in his vision.
He said, “It simply has to be that way! I mean, you can't not do it that way. You have to make it rustic; you have to have those emotions; you have to have the songs... I mean, it has to be crafted in the same spirit that Khalnayak was crafted. You know? We don't want... well, you know what I'm trying to say. I don't want anything else. So, I think 110%—if you can't make it as rustic as Khalnayak was, then I think it's better not to make Khalnayak at all. You know?”
The return of Ballu Balram has naturally sparked massive anticipation, especially since the original 1993 blockbuster Khal Nayak remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic films. Sanjay Dutt, who defined the role decades ago, is now stepping into it again with the backing of Aksha Kamboj and production support from Jio Studios. The project also marks the first production venture of Aspect Entertainment, under the Aspect Global umbrella.
With Subhash Ghai revisiting the world he originally created and Sanjay Dutt promising an authentic, rooted approach, Khalnayak Returns is shaping up to be more than just a sequel—it is being positioned as a revival of emotion, music, and storytelling that defined an era.
