Nor’wester to bring rain relief to Kolkata, south Bengal from Sunday; orange alert in north

Kolkata, April 25 (SocialNews.XYZ) In a relief from the sweltering heat and heatwave-like conditions in parts of West Bengal, the Met office on Saturday forecast Nor’wester storms over Kolkata and several south Bengal districts from Sunday onwards.

The weather office said stormy conditions accompanied by rain would begin in select parts of south Bengal from Saturday evening. Alerts have been issued for North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Nadia, Birbhum, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Bankura, Purulia, Jhargram, and West Midnapore districts.

Kolkata is also likely to witness stormy weather and rainfall from Sunday.

A Nor’wester forecast remains in effect for all districts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, from Sunday till next Friday. Rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds at 40 to 50 kmph are expected during this period.

According to the Met department, the storms may be more intense in some districts. Wind speeds could reach 50 to 60 kmph in Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, West Midnapore, Bankura, Purulia, Jhargram, East Burdwan, Murshidabad, Nadia and Birbhum.

Over the sea, gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea off the West Bengal and north Odisha coasts till Tuesday.

Meanwhile, north Bengal is expected to receive rain accompanied by thunderstorms. Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar may witness heavy rainfall, while other districts are also likely to receive light to moderate rain. Gusty winds are also expected, the Met Office said.

An orange alert has been issued for these northern districts. Such weather conditions are likely to persist in north Bengal from Saturday till next Friday.

The temperature across the state is expected to drop by three to four degrees Celsius over the next five days.

“An axis extends from eastern Uttar Pradesh to southern Bangladesh, passing over Bihar, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal. Its height above sea level is 0.9 km. In addition, there is a cyclonic circulation over Uttar Pradesh and adjoining areas. As a result, a large amount of water vapour from the Bay of Bengal has started entering the land again. Due to this, there are favourable conditions for thunderstorms in the districts of West Bengal,” a Met department official said.

The minimum temperature in Kolkata on Saturday morning was 27.8 degrees Celsius, 1.6 degrees above normal. On Friday, the maximum temperature in the city was 36 degrees Celsius, 0.1 degrees above normal.
