Supriya Sule calls for immediate action over rising crimes against women in Maharashtra

Mumbai, April 20 (SocialNews.XYZ) NCP (SP) Working President and MP, Supriya Sule, on Monday in a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation regarding the safety of women in the state and highlighted a disturbing rise in atrocities against women, including physical assault, murder, sexual exploitation, domestic violence, and kidnapping.

Sule specifically pointed to the heinous increase in the exploitation of young girls, noting that major urban centres like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Nashik are seeing a surge in crime that has left citizens living under a shadow of fear.

Sule emphasised that the fear is not limited to cities, and rural areas are equally affected, leading parents to worry about their daughters' safety. This environment, she noted, is directly impacting girls' access to education, health, and overall development.

"It is a matter of great regret that the reputation of our state, which is known nationwide for its law and order, is being tarnished," Sule stated, adding that providing a safe environment to the citizens is the fundamental responsibility of the Fadnavis government.

To address these challenges, Sule made a comprehensive set of demands from Chief Minister Fadnavis. “As the Home Minister, our CM Fadnavis should personally and urgently review women's security across all districts. There should be a significant increase in the number of women in the police force and an intensification of night patrolling. The government needs to review and operationalise 'Vishakha Committees' in every district and fill up vacant positions in the State Women’s Commission immediately,” she said.

She further emphasised the need for strengthening village-level mechanisms to curb domestic violence, adoption of a 'Zero Tolerance' policy regarding child marriage and child abuse, with strict instructions for government agencies to remain vigilant and immediate issuance of safety guidelines for female students in schools and colleges.

Sule urged Chief Minister Fadnavis to take the expressed concerns seriously and implement the necessary action plan to restore a sense of security for the women of Maharashtra.
