Kolkata, April 15 (SocialNews.XYZ) A central force jawan on election duty has died mysteriously in Falta of South 24 Parganas district, officials said on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Kanak Koch.
He was a constable with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. It may be noted that a large number of central force jawans have been deployed across West Bengal for the Assembly polls.
According to locals and administrative officials, Kanak, a resident of Assam, had gone on polling duty in the Dostipur area of Falta police station.
He was declared dead by doctors when he was taken to the hospital on Tuesday night.
It was learnt that accommodation arrangements had been made for 86 Indo-Tibetan Border Police jawans at Dostipur High School. Everyone had fallen asleep after eating on Tuesday night.
While going to the toilet late at night, a jawan saw Kanak lying face down on the balcony. Other jawans quickly rescued him.
He was taken to Diamond Harbour Medical College and Hospital in a bloody state. There, doctors declared him dead.
The body has been sent to the Diamond Harbour Police Morgue for autopsy. The police's initial assumption is that he fell down the stairs. However, the real cause of death will be clear only after the autopsy report. The police are waiting for that. An investigation into the matter has started.
“An unnatural death case has begun. Efforts are on to find out how the jawan died. Prima facie, it appears that he fell. However, an investigation is on,” said a senior officer of Diamond Harbour Police.
According to the officer, family members of the deceased jawan have been informed about the tragedy.
Polling will be held in 294 Assembly constituencies of West Bengal in two phases on April 23 and 29.
Diamond Harbour will go to the polls in the second phase. Vote counting will take place on May 4.
