Konkona Sen Sharma spoke about her cinematic choices and preference for meaningful storytelling at the event “Konkona Sharma Celebrates India’s Handloom Heritage & The Spirit Of Heirlooms For The Future,” held a day ago.
During the interaction, the actress described herself as “genre agnostic,” stating that she does not prioritise any specific genre as long as a film is well-crafted. However, she admitted that she is generally not drawn to larger-than-life or epic-scale spectacles unless they are backed by strong intent and substance.
Citing an example, Konkona explained how even non-realistic narratives can work when they carry depth:
“Sinners was a film which was not necessarily realistic at all… it had some deep truths brought out through allegory, metaphor, fantasy… it was pretty epic, but it had a strong commentary. It was very well thought out… but by and large, usually I’m not drawn to that kind of [larger-than-life spectacle],” she said.
She emphasised that for her, thoughtful storytelling and deeper meaning outweigh scale and visual grandeur, aligning with her consistent choice of layered, human-centric roles.
Reflecting on what makes characters truly stand out, Konkona offered a philosophical take:
“Nobody’s exceptional continuously. We’re all kind of ordinary actually… sometimes we make exceptional choices and that’s amazing to witness.”
She further highlighted the role of the filmmaker’s perspective in shaping narratives:
“Anything can become exceptional; it’s how you view it.”
The actress’ thoughts resonated with the theme of the event, which celebrated India’s rich handloom heritage and the timeless value of heirlooms—both rooted in authenticity, craft, and legacy.
