Ekta Kapoor Reveals Akshay Kumar Once Returned His Fee After Film Flop

Producer Ekta Kapoor recently shared a surprising and heartfelt anecdote about Akshay Kumar that left many in the industry impressed. Speaking at the trailer launch of Bhooth Bangla, Kapoor revealed that the actor once returned his fee after one of their films failed at the box office. The gesture, she admitted, was something she had never witnessed in her decades-long career.

Recalling the moment, Kapoor said she was completely taken aback when Kumar personally called her and handed back a cheque to compensate for her losses. “I was in shock,” she said, emphasizing how rare such actions are in an industry where financial risks are usually borne entirely by producers. In her 31 years of filmmaking, she noted, no other actor had ever made a similar move.

The incident reportedly took place after one of their earlier collaborations underperformed, though Kapoor chose not to name the film. What stood out to her was not just the financial gesture, but the intent behind it. Kumar’s decision to step in and share the burden reflected a sense of responsibility and empathy that is seldom seen in show business.

Interestingly, Kapoor chose not to accept the cheque. Instead, she expressed a desire to collaborate with Kumar again, believing that a future project together would hold more value than a refund. That decision ultimately paved the way for Bhooth Bangla, marking their much-anticipated reunion.

Directed by Priyadarshan, Bhooth Bangla is a horror-comedy that revolves around a man who inherits a mysterious bungalow, only to discover it is haunted along with the surrounding forest. His decision to marry in a village gripped by fear of a sinister entity named Vadhusur sets off a chain of chaotic and comedic events. The film brings together a strong ensemble cast including Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Tabu, and Wamiqa Gabbi.

The project also marks a reunion between Kumar and Priyadarshan, a duo known for delivering cult favorites like Hera Pheri, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and Garam Masala. Produced by Akshay Kumar along with Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor, the film was initially scheduled for release on April 10 but has now been pushed to April 17, with paid previews set to begin on April 16 evening.

Kapoor’s story not only highlights a rare act of integrity but also sets the tone for their renewed collaboration, one built on mutual respect and a shared belief in storytelling.
