Kolkata, Jan 17 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday submitted a fresh status report on the progress of its investigation into the alleged larger conspiracy behind the rape and murder of a junior woman doctor of state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024, at a trial court in Sealdah in central Kolkata.
The last time the central investigating agency submitted a status report in the matter was in November 2025. However, the victim’s parents expressed grievance over the slow progress of the investigation into the alleged larger conspiracy behind the crime.
The counsel for the victim’s parents argued that almost a year had passed since the sole convict in the rape and murder case, Sanjay Roy, an erstwhile civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, had been sentenced to life imprisonment, but the CBI had not progressed beyond filing status reports in its investigation into the larger conspiracy behind the crime.
It is learnt that in the fresh status report, the CBI claimed that since November last year, when the previous status report was submitted at the trial court, investigating officials have recorded statements of 12 additional witnesses in the matter. Besides the status report, the CBI also submitted the case diary in the matter before the trial court.
The body of the junior doctor was recovered from the seminar hall of R.G. Kar on the morning of August 9, 2024. Initially, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolkata Police started the probe and arrested Sanjay Roy.
Later, the CBI took over the investigation following an order of the Calcutta High Court.
Last year, the trial court sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment. However, the CBI’s investigation into the alleged larger conspiracy behind the crime is still ongoing.
The matter is currently being heard both in the trial court and the Calcutta High Court.
