"Guru Dutt Was Everything to Me": Rahul Rawail Pays Brief But Powerful Tribute at Celebrate Cinema Festival

On day two of the annual Celebrate Cinema festival at Whistling Woods International (WWI), the atmosphere was filled with nostalgia and reverence as legendary filmmakers Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt were remembered in a heartfelt session. The event featured veteran filmmaker Rahul Rawail and actor Ranbir Kapoor, grandson of Raj Kapoor, in a special conversation moderated by filmmaker Subhash Ghai.

Following the session, Rahul Rawail, known for classics like Love Story, Betaab, and Arjun, kept his remarks brief but meaningful. Speaking to the media, he said, "It was a good session."

When asked about Guru Dutt, Rawail offered a poignant and deeply personal reflection, despite being pressed for time. "I wish I had to talk about him, but I am in a hurry. But he was everything to me. Whatever I know about cinema is because of him. I really wish I had time to discuss this further, but I really must go," he said, capturing in just a few words the immense influence Guru Dutt had on his cinematic journey.

Though short, his tribute underscored the emotional and artistic weight Guru Dutt holds for filmmakers across generations. Known not just for his directorial work but also for authoring Raj Kapoor: The Master at Work, a book chronicling his time as an assistant to the iconic showman, Rawail has long been an advocate for preserving India’s rich film legacy.

The session stood out as a rare and touching gathering of generations, with Ranbir Kapoor representing the Kapoor legacy and Rawail representing his own lineage of cinematic storytelling—both shaped by the genius of the legends they paid tribute to.
