Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra Understand the Script Like No One Else, Says Writer Mayur Puri

Screenwriter and lyricist Mayur Puri, known for his work on some of Bollywood's biggest blockbusters, recently opened up about his experience working with top-tier actors—and singled out two names who stand apart in their understanding of a script: Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra.

Speaking candidly, Puri said, “Entire lot of actors on one side, and Shah Rukh Khan on the other.” He explained that writing for SRK feels like a deeply intuitive process. “When I write for Shah Rukh, it's unbelievable—because when he reads the script for the first time, he delivers it exactly how I imagined it in my head. He takes the pause where I mentally placed one, he emphasizes the line where I felt it needed weight. He just knows. He understands the writer, the script, and how to elevate a scene.”

This unique synergy between writer and actor, according to Puri, is rare. “I haven’t worked this closely with every actor, so I won’t generalize. But Shah Rukh Khan is accurate—accurate with his understanding. The second actor I’ve felt this with is Priyanka Chopra. She reads a scene and instantly grasps what we’re trying to achieve. It’s instinctive for her.”

Mayur Puri, whose writing credits include Om Shanti Om, Happy New Year, the Hindi adaptation of Disney’s The Lion King, and the upcoming Mufasa, proudly noted that all four films he’s written for SRK have turned into blockbusters. His praise for both actors not only highlights their professionalism but also their artistic sensitivity and collaborative spirit.
