Nirmal Kapoor, Beloved Matriarch of the Kapoor Clan, Passes Away at 90

Nirmal Kapoor, the matriarch of one of Bollywood’s most celebrated families, passed away on Friday at the age of 90. She breathed her last at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital in Mumbai around 5:25 PM, as confirmed by Dr. Santosh Shetty, CEO and Executive Director of the hospital. Her passing marks the end of an era for the Kapoor household, which has significantly shaped the landscape of Indian cinema for generations.

 

Known for her grace, quiet strength, and the pivotal role she played behind the scenes, Nirmal Kapoor was the wife of veteran film producer Surinder Kapoor. Together, they raised a family that would go on to leave an indelible mark on Indian film and television. Her sons—Boney, Anil, and Sanjay Kapoor—became prominent figures in the industry, while her daughter Reena Kapoor Marwah maintained the family’s dignified presence outside of the limelight.

 

Just last year, the Kapoor family had come together to celebrate Nirmal Kapoor’s 90th birthday, a moment fondly remembered through social media tributes. Anil Kapoor had shared heartfelt images with his mother, writing, “90 years of love, strength, and endless sacrifices.” That sentiment now echoes through the condolences and memories pouring in from both fans and celebrities who recognized her as the quiet pillar behind a cinematic dynasty.

 

Nirmal Kapoor leaves behind not just her children, but a legacy that spans generations of film stars and producers, including grandchildren Arjun, Sonam, Rhea, Harsh Varrdhan, Janhvi, Anshula, Khushi, and Mohit Marwah. Her life may have remained largely out of the public eye, but her influence will continue to be felt through the enduring legacy of the Kapoor family. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family shortly.
