"I’ve been fortunate to work with some incredible directors who’ve shaped my career in ways I could never have imagined," Vicky began, acknowledging the importance of good direction in bringing a character to life. "Being in front of the camera, an actor often gets the limelight, but cinema is a director’s medium. Everything you see on screen—the actor, the background, the setting—depends on the director," he said, reinforcing the idea that the director's vision is crucial to creating a memorable film.
For his role as the Maratha king Sambhaji in Chhaava, directed by Laxman Utekar, Vicky praised the filmmaker's commitment and authenticity. "Laxman Utekar has made me look like ‘Chhaava,’" Vicky said. "He started calling me ‘Raje’ from the very beginning, not by my name, Vicky. That small detail gave me a sense of responsibility and filled me with confidence. It reminded me of the weight of the role I’m portraying."
Vicky also acknowledged the tremendous influence of other directors he has worked with, including Meghna Gulzar and Shoojit Sircar, who have helped him hone his craft over the years. "It's not just about the actor; it's about the director's vision. The director is the one who helps an actor transform into a character. Every little nuance of the film comes from their direction."
At the Kala Ghoda Festival, Vicky made sure to highlight the significance of Chhaava's journey and the importance of starting the promotional campaign in Mumbai. "It had to begin in Mumbai, where the pride of Maratha culture resides. This film is deeply rooted in Marathi pride, and Mumbai is the perfect place to launch this journey."
Directed by Laxman Utekar and based on the Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant, Chhaava tells the story of Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of the legendary Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The film also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna. Set for release on February 14, 2025, the film promises to bring to life the courage and valor of a great warrior.
With Chhaava set to be one of Vicky’s most impactful performances, the actor credits his filmmakers for giving him the opportunity to bring such a powerful character to life on screen. "Without the right direction and guidance, none of this would be possible," he concluded, paying tribute to the directors who continue to inspire him.
