Retired DU professor falls victim to cyber fraud

New Delhi, July 10 (SocialNews.XYZ) A retired Delhi University professor became the latest victim of cyber fraud in the capital.

73-year-old professor Ramesh Chand Bhardwaj told police that he received bulk messages with a web link which offered to redeem credit card points and provide cashback after which he uploaded his details - card number, CVV number, Expiry Date, MPIN, mail ID and password on the weblink attached in bulk message. Following this Rs 60,000 was deducted from his SBI credit card. A case was registered in this regard in North Delhi's Roop Nagar.

During enquiry, gift cards purchased from Amazon Pay using online and IP address for the alleged transactions were analysed and later the police zeroed in on a person named Adarsh. He was arrested. He later confessed to being Vikas and duped people under a false name.

"During interrogation, accused Vikas Jha disclosed that he sent a link to a web domain from bulk messages to several persons for details like Card Number, CVV Number, Date of Expiry, MPIN, Mail ID and password. He used information uploaded by the victim on the dashboard of the web domain for transactions on Amazon Pay. The accused further disclosed that he sold several gift cards online on Paxful.com. He also disclosed that he obtained activated SIM from Firozabad, UP which were KYC enabled also," Monika Bhardwaj, DCP North said.

In a similar case, a man was duped on the pretext of providing benefits under old age policy. In a case registered at Kotwali, the complainant alleged that he was asked by a girl and a man to deposit 3 instalments of Rs 94,200. The receipts were sent to him and on verification, they were found fake. In this regard accused Rohit Dixit, a resident of Ghaziabad has been arrested.
