Ensure safety of assault victim, NCW tells Kerala DGP

New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS) Taking note of an alleged assault on a pregnant woman in Kerala, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Thursday said it had directed the state DGP to take strict action against the accused and to ensure her safety and security.

"The NCW has directed the Director General of Police to send an action-taken report at the earliest. The commission will shortly conduct an inquiry into the crime," a NCW statement said.

According to the NCW, the woman, a resident of Kozhikode district, had complained about criminal trespass and physical assault by seven accused on January 28.

The complainant said that the seven persons named in her plaint barged into her house with deadly weapons around 9.30 p.m. on January 28 and dragged her out.

The woman, then four months pregnant, was allegedly beaten up and even kicked in the abdomen, leading to her abortion.

The NCW said she had approached police but did not receive any positive response.

A leader of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist and five others were arrested last week in the case.
