Anganwadi workers hold up traffic, cane-charged in Lucknow

Lucknow, Oct 23 (IANS) Many anganwadi workers were injured when police cane-charged hundreds of protesters holding up traffic here on Monday to press for their demands.

The police acted to clear the busy Vidhan Sabha Road and the Raj Bhavan area of the protesters. However, over a dozen women protesters gave police the slip and barged into state Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters here.

The protesting anganwadi workers also tried to move towards Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's official residence at 5, Kalidas Marg, but were prevented by police.

They squatted on the road and raised anti-government and anti-BJP slogans.

Their demands include regularisation of about 5,000 anganwadi workers, a hike in wages and bringing them at par with state government employees.
